Student Random Acts of Kindness - A Spur of the Moment Blog Idea

Student RAKs

This week, I witnessed one of my 10th grade students do something unexpectedly kind and ethical. Of course, I posted on social media about it, because that's what I do. Unexpectedly, the response was wide-spread and positive. I mean, I knew people would like it and find it nice, but I was a bit taken aback at how much people appreciated hearing about the good things our students do these days. Despite it initially being a joke at first, here I am starting a blog to record and spread positive feelings from the kindness of our youth. This blog may end up being 2 posts long (because that's what I've got this week) or it may flourish into something bigger. If it flops, I'll just blame it on a whim while procrastinating on the Friday before Spring Break.

The mission is simple. If you like the idea, feel free to follow the blog and share it. Most importantly though, I'm hoping that people will contribute real stories about real and random kind things that students are doing in their schools and communities. I am not looking for curricular stuff mandated or planned by compassionate, caring staff (as we type this, my own son is on a service learning trip supporting Bernie's Book Bank). That stuff is great, but I am asking for stories of unsolicited, Random Acts of Kindness. If you observe something or hear about something, please pass it along. I guess, ultimately, I want to spread hope and positivity for today and our future.

So we'll start with the observance that started this silly idea:

On Tuesday 3/19, one of my sophomore boys stepped in the hallway and found a $20 bill on the ground. He immediately turned around and handed it to me in case anyone came looking for it or reported missing money. I doubted anyone would come asking for the money...so I told him that if no one inquired after a couple of days, we would donate it to a charity. It has been 3 days, so I have tasked this young man with choosing a place to donate the money. His good deed - his choice.

My gut says that most students, and honestly, most adults, would pocket the cash...so I was really proud of him for making such an ethically pure choice. When he chooses the charity, I will do my best to remember to post that update.
